Our Task

My engineering team was tasked with increasing the campus usage of greywater at Pitt. We determined that many students lacked knowledge on the subject and also lacked interest, so we created a way to integrate greywater conservation and understanding into a student coursework. As a team we developed a how might we question to guide us,  How might we educate Pitt undergraduate students on the importance of using greywater. With this we developed 3 low resolution prototypes and a final prototype to hopefully solve our problem and increase campus greywater usage by using the students that are already here, while educating them along the way.

Low resolution prototypes

Educational Instagram

This prototype was designed to be a fun and engaging social media page that would teach students about greywater. By using a platform most students already have we can make a platform where we can educate students through interactive posts, graphics, and videos, as well as giving students a place to ask questions through direct messages.

Interactive Series

This prototype would consist of a series of events such as scavenger hunts, trivia nights, and quizzes, all centered around greywater to encourage and teach students about greywater. By making greywater fun and educational it will help students understand how it works and how they can integrate sustainability into there lives. By providing rewards like Pitt merchandise, meal vouchers, and other small prizes we can incentivize students to participate.

Design Competition

This prototype is a poster promoting a campus wide greywater design competition open to students from all majors. The goal is to educate about greywater while at the same time creating a solution to the problem. For example engineering students might design a greywater reuse system while business majors might focus on campus outreach. To incentivize our competition students could earn credits and a sustainability certification tied to there degree.

Final Prototype

What is it?

For our final prototype our team decided on the design competition as we thought that it is our strongest of the 3 prototypes. However we are combining this with the Instagram, the Instagram will now promote the design competition. For our final physical prototype we designed a Instagram page that is promoting the design competition that is on a display phone to meet the physical requirements as the design competition is not something that is a physical product.
